Putting the Craic (and Calmer Evenings!) Back into the Kitchen
I am beyond thrilled to share that I’m joining Sinéad Ryan on Newstalk’s The Home Show this evening after 5pm to chat all things back-to-school meal prep, cozy winter warmers, and the ultimate freezer hacks!
To celebrate, I put my heart and soul into creating a master culinary guide: Home-Cooked & Living Well. It was such a joy to write because it hits directly at the heart of why so many of us fell in love with food in the first place—bringing people around the table without the crushing 5:00 PM panic!
Why This Guide is So Close to My Heart
Let’s be honest: midweek cooking can feel like a relentless chore. Between back-to-school runs, college schedules, work demands, and rising bills, decision fatigue is real. Food should bring us together, but the stress of pulling a meal from scratch every single night often robs us of those precious family moments.
I wanted to build a practical framework that proves KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is the only approach that works in a busy home. You don't need to spend eight hours every Sunday standing over hot stoves. You just need clever, intentional systems that save your energy, protect your wallet, and make food fun again!
The Magic Inside the Guide
The "Mother & Daughter" Recipe System: Cook one concentrated, flavor-packed base (the Mother) and easily spin it into three or four completely different midweek dinners (the Daughters) in minutes. Think rich tomato-root veg bases turning into bolognese, baked potato toppings, or instant flatbread pizzas.
The Sunday Roast Transformation: Cook one roast joint on Sunday and get three distinct family dinners PLUS gourmet cafe-style toasties for weekday lunches. Your cold leftover mash even turns into a bacon-and-scallion potato salad!
The Flat-Freeze Ziplock Hack: Freeze your sauces flat in ziplock bags so they stack vertically like books on a shelf! It saves 70% of freezer space and thaws in under 15 minutes in warm water. (Shoutout to Little Lou for her reusable freezer pouches, and Roll It by Mairead Finnegan for keeping pastry local and easy!)
Modern Appliance Magic: Using slow cookers for effortless, set-and-forget braises and air fryers for the crispiest stuffed jacket potato skins and melted toasties in minutes.
The Real Magic? It’s More Than Just Food
Writing this wasn't just about recipes; it was about transforming household energy.
When you have a plan, the midweek chaos evaporates. You save money on groceries, eliminate food waste completely, cut down on energy bills, and—most importantly—get to sit down, take a breath, and enjoy good food with the people you love.
Tune in to The Home Show on Newstalk evening to catch my chat with Sinéad! Let’s banish the midweek dinner stress and put the joy back into home cooking!
